Local comedian Betty Costello is our special guest on this weeks episode of SquabbleBox, a sure fire favourite with our listeners, this being her third appearance on the show, and as always it was absolutely hilarious.
Interviewing comedians has become one of my favourite parts of the job here on SquabbleBox. They’re open, honest, confident on the microphone and always up for a laugh, even if it is at their own expense. You just have to make sure you explain the rules of OFCOM very clearly!
Following a successful first term of classes and a hilarious Improv Pantomime to cap off the course before Christmas, Betty was in the studio to promote the upcoming show from the Phwoar Horseman, and Lincoln Comedy Academy that will take place at Brew Haus Lincoln on Saturday 13th February.
For people who don’t know much about the comedy scene here in Lincoln, believe me, you are missing out. The comedy scene is thriving with up and coming comedians, as well as established comedians that are passing on their knowledge to the next generation. For such a small city, the comedy scene is getting bigger and brighter as months go by, and the best bit is, there is an appetite for it. The fans are eating it up. It’s no wonder that big TV comedians, the likes of Justin Moorhouse, Romesh Ranganathan, Lee Nelson and Chris Ramsey are all bringing their tours here to Lincoln over the next two months.
The Lincoln Comedy Academy was set up in 2015 as a place for local Lincoln talent to develop their comedic skills and grow as performers. Set up by Lincoln born comedian Paul Mutagajja, a man you will see at pretty much every comedy event around the city whether he is on stage or in the audience supporting the craft, alongside Father Ted star and Perrier Award winner Ben Keaton. The course has been highly successful so far, attracting a wide range of local talent from people who have done a bit of comedy before to complete novices.
Betty Costello is an exceptionally funny comedian who self admittedly fell into stand-up last year after being spotted by Ben, who saw her charisma and natural talent as a comic and convinced her to give it a go. In the few times we have met since her first appearance on the show, I have laughed every single time, there is something about her that just makes you smile, and that is the first real challenge to succeed as a comedian. With her partner also being a stand-up comedian, one can only imagine the sheer hilarity in their household. On air and off, Betty is always a delight, and to myself has always reminded me of a young Sarah Millican, something which I hope she takes as the compliment it is supposed to be!
Fittingly, our buzzword on SquabbleBox this week is COMEDIANS, so we asked Betty about some of her inspirations, as well as some of her current favourites.
The Lincoln Comedy Academy are currently running their Solo Performance course that will be completing on Saturday with a big show at Brew Haus Lincoln and will involve solo stand up alongside improvisational comedy. Trust me, this is a must see event and a fantastic night out. It cannot be missed.
The future is bright for Betty, and comedy in Lincoln alike. I have come across many young and hungry comedians since I moved to this city and there are very few who don’t have that drive that you need to succeed. You can just tell the passion that the local comedians of Lincoln have for this amazing art form and it is wonderful that Ben and Paul have put together such a great forum for people to learn, develop and ultimately achieve.
It is a pleasure to be able to be here for the ride as Lincoln’s comedy scene grows to new heights. Make sure you’re apart of it too. #SupportLocalComedy
