Siren Folk’s Alan Ritson
Written by Ryan Jones on 5th June 2015
Alan’s association with Siren FM began back in 2011 as presenter of the stations first show dedicated entirely to music and interviews with performers from the world of folk.
For many years Alan has had the good fortune to meet up with artists in the world of pop and rock music including the vast majority of current folk music performers and has staged numerous events at Lincoln Drill Hall, The Theatre Royal and even Lincoln Castle where an audience in excess of 1000 people watched performances by the Kate Rusby Band, LAU and Faustus. In July 2016 he will present and compere the city’s first full day of Folk at Lincoln Drill Hall featuring amongst other acts, Lindisfarne and Julie Felix.
For the past 40 years, Andy Watkins has staged folk concerts at numerous local venues including currently, The Unision Club in Lincoln and Faldingworth Village Hall to which Alan has been invited as compere for a number of those events which also creates a further opportunity to record artist interviews.
His ownership of The Old Bakery restaurant with rooms in Lincoln has enabled him to provide meals and accommodation for the vast majority of musicians performing in Lincoln and created additional opportunities to record interviews following dinner at that establishment or breakfast the following day.
Alan also presents a weekly one hour show called ‘Fine Folk’ on a sister Community Radio Station during which local and nationally known musicians are invited to perform live in the studio. Those sessions are recorded for repeat transmission and captured for further broadcast on Siren Fm’s Siren Folk by kind permission.
Recently the English Folk Dance and Song Society have agreed to archive those interviews which currently number in excess of 400 and can in future be accessed by a worldwide audience, being retained for posterity for years to come by new generations of folk audiences.
Alan looks forward to many more years of broadcasting the latest news and concert details from the world of folk and of course featuring new releases, firm favourites and live performances from the finest musicians.
