YMCA’s Cornhill Community Day brings in National Award Votes

Written by on 20th July 2016

YMCA Lincolnshire’s Parkour Club, based at The Showroom Activity Centre on Tritton Road, are chasing support of the local community to be named the UK’s Best Sports Project.

The group of Freerunners organised an outreach event which took place this Saturday, 16th June in the city centre around Lincoln Cornhill.

Members of the public of all ages came to try their hand at Rock Climbing, Parkour and Freerunning.

Parkour is the discipline of efficient movement that includes running, jumping, climbing, vaulting and rolling, as well as adaptive movements.

The Showroom’s Joe Hicks, who has coached Parkour and movement disciplines in Lincolnshire for the past seven years, has delivered sessions to various groups, including Youth Offending and Children’s Services, Lincolnshire County Council and many schools.

Joe says; “Parkour is accessible to everyone – all you need is yourself! …we’re encouraging participants to explore a new sport many might not have had the opportunity to try before.”

The event sought to encourage voting in support of Lincolnshire’s local Sports Project Finalists; YMCA Lincolnshire’s Parkour Club, in the final round of the prestigious National Lottery Awards 2016.

TV Personality, John Barrowman, National Lottery Awards Ambassador and Awards Presenter, explains how The Showroom Parkour Club “is up against six other finalists for Best Sports project, and is the only entrant from Lincoln in this category, competing for a £3,000 prize and the chance to feature on a BBC One show in September.”

“The National Lottery Awards celebrate and recognise the inspirational and life-changing impact of National Lottery funded projects. Each week National Lottery players raise more than £36 million for arts, sport, heritage and community projects across the UK.’
