Join Tom Stevens every Tuesday from 12pm until 1pm for Siren Simply Jazz only on Siren FM and online.
Relax with your lunchtime jazz as Tom plays the very best of past and present jazz and swing with the melodies from the golden age of the Big Bands.
With two special guests, Tom is joined first by Ed Puddick who is one of the best jazz composers and arrangers in the UK today. Ed has been commissioned to write music for many professional and educational groups around the country; including the Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Orchestra, Greater Manchester Music Hub, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Marlborough College Big Band, National Youth Jazz Wales, Northwood College Jazz Band, NYJO, Steve Taylor Big Band, Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra and Zephyrus Saxophone Quartet. Ed teaches Jazz Arranging at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Ed is also jazz arranger and big band leader and a lecture at guildhall school of music and drama. Secondly is an International trumpet artist, Mike Vax, who has played lead and solo trumpet with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, the Clark Terry Big Bad Band, and the U.S. Navy Show Band.
Mike has also performed and recorded with such greats as Art Pepper, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway, Al Grey, Freddy Hubbard The Glenn Miller, Harry James, and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras.
As a recording musician, he has performed on more than 75 albums, including 20 under his own name. and he currently leads the Stan Kenton Legacy Orchestra which in 2014 changed from the Stan Kenton Alumni .The Legacy orchestra comes together to perform for festivals, clinics, concerts, cruises, and dances. The band makes tours around the United States every year and does jazz cruises and festivals. They perform some of the well-known music of the Stan Kenton Orchestra in keeping with Stans insistence on not just performing nostalgia type music, they also perform fresh new material written in the Kenton style, as well as original material written by members of the Band. They are NOT trying to be the Stan Kenton Orchestra but they are carrying on his tradition of dedication to creative music and to jazz education. In April this year they have been on tour across the USA and as usual, they have recorded every concert on the tour and from the last tour from 2015 they have released a brand new album Storming Through the South it was released in early April on Summit Records. It came out great. Some really interesting compositions and arrangements from members or the orchestra plus some Kenton Favorites new releases and features on the show. If you miss the show you can always catch the repeat programme on Siren FM website or listen on Mixcloud. Just search for Siren Simply Jazz Show, or look for our page on Facebook.
