This weeks siren Simply Jazz show was special celebrating an american singing legend who this year celebrated his 90th Birthday of Anthony Benedetto which is a companion to the forthcoming NBC prime-time special, “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet To Come,” which airs on December 20th in the USA. The special was filmed in front of a live audience at Radio City Music Hall on September 15th and features performances by Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé, Andrea Bocelli, Kevin Spacey, Tony Bennett and many others.
Tony Bennett was born in the Astoria neighbourhood of Queens, in New York city. By his teens, he was already set on a career as a professional singer. After briefly studying art , he left to help support the family, working as a singing waiter in italian restaurants. Drafted into the USA Army at 18, Bennett served as an infantryman on the front line in France and Germany, and later sang with an Army Band.
After the war, Bennett studied singing and his interest in jazz led him to vocally mimic the phrasing of jazz musicians.
