Let me tell how it’s going to be…….It’s June 2018. Kyle, Paul and TJ from Burton band Theia are chatting backstage before they prepare to play the main stage at Download, supporting Alter Bridge on the Ozzy’s Still Sober Stage.

Kyle – ‘Guys, who remembers the first time we played an acoustic session for the radio?’

TJ – ‘Yeah, I remember. I was 15 at the time. It was for those rather tubby chaps Kev and Mark from Siren FM’

Paul – ‘Of Course I remember. It was for The Rock Train. We went in there, belted out 4 songs in one take then they did an interview with us that was so inspiring that young bands have been listening to it ever since’

Kyle – ‘Yeah that right lads. The Rock Train, Siren FM. Back in 2013. They were the first radio show to play our music and look where we are now. It’s 2018 and we are playing Download. ‘

TJ – ‘Heck, I never did understand a word that Welsh fella said during our visit but him and Kev believed in our music and they played our EP to death and told everyone how great we were.’

Paul- ‘ Yeah, The Rock Train. We’ll never forget how they helped us and all those other bands starting out.’

Kyle – ‘ I often think back and wonder whatever happened to that Kev and Mark’.

The End

THEIA can be heard Friday 17th May 8pm on The Rock Train Extra Carriage, repeating Saturday 19th May 9pm

There’s plenty of cake and chat about Twitter on this week’s episode of Food for Thought. I spoke to Katie Scott from Cocoa Cupcake. She makes cupcakes, biscuits and cakes and I wanted to find out more about her business. I also caught up with the BookStop Cafe, it opened over the Bank Holiday weekend and supports local authors.

Listen to this week’s podcast here:

Katie Scott, from Cocoa Cupcake, makes fantastic looking cakes for people’s birthdays and weddings but baking and decorating has long been a hobby of hers. Katie chatted to me about how she got back into baking, as well as how sites like Twitter help her to promote her work.

You can listen to the interview with Katie Scott in full here:

The Bookstop Cafe opened on the Bank Holiday weekend so I went along to find out what they are offering Lincoln.

Joff Gainey, who runs the new cafe, wanted to combine his love of cake and tea with his interest in books and reading. He is also a local author and wants the Bookstop Cafe to be a place to promote and support other local authors.

You can listen to the interview with Joff here:

If you liked listening to this podcast then make sure you tune in to Siren FM on Wednesdays at 2pm or Saturdays at 3pm to hear Food for Thought as it goes out on the radio station.

This week The Rock Train goes on two journeys. Thursday at 8pm there is the standard show, packed with interviews, new music and jolly banter. The Thursday shows will continue to showcase the best of new rock and metal from unsigned as well as international artists plus interviews with special guests.

Then on Friday at 8pm behold the debut of the new show, The Rock Train Extra Carriage. The new show is still presented by Mark and Kev and in time will feature some local guest presenters drawn from the world of Lincoln’s music scene. The Extra Carriage will offer a look back at rock’s vast back catalogue, festival features, local bands and acoustic sessions. There will also be extended versions of some of the more in-depth interviews.

So just a couple of days before we recorded Thursday’s show we were devastated along with music fans around the world to learn of the death of influential musician and writer Jeff Hannerman, guitarist and driving force behind the legendary band Slayer. Thursday’s show opens with Raining Blood by Slayer in tribute. We will feature a full Rock Train tribute to Jeff Hannerman and his contribution to the genre in a future Extra Carriage show over the summer.

Also in Thursday’s show we interview Homeless Hill, a band from georgia USA who we were introduced to by Lincoln based promoter Tom Brumpton.

We predict that this band can really take off and go places. Check out their website here for a quote they have used by Mark….

We also feature interviews with Swedish band Free fall and Derbyshire legends Hell, who Mark caught up with minutes before their homecoming spectacular show in Derby earlier this year.

As always on the show there is an assault of new music from a variety of bands big and small and we headline the show with the new single from Megadeth.

Sacred Mother Tongue at Hammerfest (photo courtesy of Shoot Plymouth)

Friday at 8pm sees The Rock Train Extra Carriage’s debut with the concluding part of our roadtrip to North Wales where we covered the Hammerfest Festival. There are interviews and music from seven more bands all in various stages of sobriety, but all deadly serious about their music.

The last 20 minutes of Friday’s show contains a departure from standard Rock Train fare as we play a track from the legend that is Stevie Nicks who teamed up with the Foo Fighters to record a haunting song, ‘You Can’t Fix This’. This track was recorded at the uber-legendary Sound City studios where Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumours and virtually every great album ever made was recorded… maybe a topic for a future Extra Carriage show…….. We end the show with great British metal behemoths Saxon who we recently saw play in Nottingham.

Kev and Mark

This week on Connected, it’s all about creativity. Jonathan and Darren check out the University of Lincoln’s Computer Science Student Showcase event, looking at all sorts of creative robots, websites and games. Inspired by Google Glass landing in the hands of (or on the heads of?) “explorers”, Jon makes his own version with some dubious results.

Plus – internet fame abound for the duo as Curiosity hits the final 50 layers, trying to make sense of curved TVs as well as the latest news, releases and a great mix of music – with tracks from Ape Escape, Red Dead Redemption and more.

Listen Again

Student Showcase

First, second and third year students at the University of Lincoln were showing off their work to prospective employers, guests and the public at the Student Showcase event.

There was things from small robot cars built with an Arduino and Raspberry Pi to games controlled with just one button, as well as more serious things such as log in and attendance systems. On the show you can hear Jon and Darren discuss some of the things they got to try.

Also at the event were industry experts from various companies around Lincoln – including Rockstar Lincoln and Software Europe. Connected got a chance to speak to them about their impressions of the day, and advice for people looking at getting in the industry:

Find out more information on the School of Computer Science blog.

GTA exclusive?

With Rockstar in attendance at the Student Showcase event, it would be wrong if we didn’t ask them about the game on everybody’s lips… hear our exclusive interview (sort of) here:

listen to ‘GTA V – Exclusive Interview on Siren FM’ on Audioboo

Homemade Google Glass

We’ve already turned Instagram in to glasses, FIFA 13 in to Monopoly and Curiosity in to a home toy. So we’ve proven our ability to bodge things together in the name of technological development.

So to make our own version of Google Glass, we took the Instaglasses – and added an 808 car key micro-camera. The idea was that they should try and slip away, it be subtle and not too obvious… But mysteriously everyone noticed them and kept talking about them.

And with little idea of how the camera aims or works, here’s the… creative attempts at photography in the studio.

It might finally be the right weather for ice cream but on Food for Thought I am talking about healthy food. I have been speaking to Claire Rick, a spokesperson for the Children’s Food Trust, about how important it is for young people to eat healthily.

There’s also some best bits from previous episodes, as well as a discussion about mug cakes.

Listen to the latest show right here:

We all know that it is better to eat healthy and to cook properly, rather than just grab a takeaway. The earlier we start doing this the better in fact, which is why charities like the Children’s Food Trust have been set up. They help schools come up with healthy menus and help parents and children out with cookery lessons.

To find out more about the work that the Children’s Food Trust does and how a healthy diet helps children to pay more attention in their lessons.

Listen to the full interview with Claire Rick, a spokesperson from the Children’s Food Trust, right here:

Even when being healthy you can always have a little bit of cake, just be good about it. This week I tried out mug cakes. They are a student’s dream as you mix together the ingredients for a cake in a mug and microwave.

I was intrigued so tried making one, and it was a bit rubbish. It mostly went all over the microwave, so I didn’t take a photograph. But if you have had a better attempt with mug cakes, or have a recipe which works really well in the microwave, then let me know and I’ll talk about it on the show.
